What MacBook do you have? You can only extend your display to one monitor on most of the recent MacBooks.
You will have to get an adapter like one of these

Once you get one of those adapters you would plug it into your Macbook, then run a cable (DVI, HDMI, or VGA) from the adapter to your monitor. After you do that you can access the display settings on your MacBook to control the resolution that is displayed on the monitor. You will also be able to set it as a mirrored or extended display.
