Todays rant - People who don't understand the difference between Modding and Hacking, but just call themselves hackers anyways.

Welcome to today's rant, may end up more of an education lesson than a rant as I'm sure people who call themselves "hackers" but are really "modders" will view this thread, now let's continue, shall we?

I have seen it a lot recently, mainly within the gaming community that gamers who use a modified Xbox/Playstation refer to themselves as "hackers" when the reality is they don't know what a hacker really is, they think hosting a hacked lobby makes them a hacker.
Now that really annoys me when I see kids with gamertags like "Welsh hacker" < this kid has a modified Xbox and doesn't know what DDoS stands for.

A simple internet search will provide people with the difference but even at that they don't understand, so I'll leave two Wikipedia links and explain the difference, then maybe you will have an opinion on this as you might not have thought about it.

Now after reading those you should know the difference,
Modder - Someone who can use a modified Xbox to host a lobby for people.
Hacker - Can make mass amount of money and cause mass amount of damage to Governments and Companies.
Obviously there is more to it than what I said but you get what I'm saying.

Example: Forums/t=6597038/hello-tech-game-users.html
Look at his username then he claims to be a modder

Now, does it annoy anyone else or just me?

Yes that is true but even at that DDoS'ing isn't even hacking so they are just skids.

Are you aware that this exact topic has been ranted on more times than I can remember. Seen a rant on this subject at least five times.

There is clearly a difference between modding and hacking but people seem to just put them together since they both kind of deal with technology. It does kind of upset me but at the same time I end up not caring because I know what the difference is.

Thanks Nasyr- for clearing it up for everyone on this site.

There are different types of hackers. You state that hackers get paid and they cause damage to companies/government.
You're talking about black hat hackers.
Have you ever heard of grey hat and white hat hackers?
White hat hackers help companies find vulnerabilities in a system.
Grey hat is a combination of both black and white.

I agree with this almost 100%, there's just one flaw.

It seems like you're trying to dissociate Xbox 360 and hackers completely, but what about people like GliGli who exploited the Xbox 360 software?
Straight from the wiki definition:

Just though I should add that in, other than that I completely agree with the modder vs. hacker argument, getting tired of the 12 year olds on XBL calling themselves "l33t h4x0rz"

I know that the different hats are but when I described it I meant in general, understanding of Anonymous, LuLzsec etc.
I have friends who are whitehat hackers, you might have heard of Aura? Very well known Whitehat helper.
I also have Greyhat and Blackhat friends, trust me I know the difference and what each does, but keep in mind all the hats know how to attack and defend, most use it in an attack way though.

That is a very valid point, there is actual hackers who have targeted Xbox and other gaming companies, but what I was meaning was people with a JTAG who call themself a hacker, when they don't know what a VPN is.

Eh I could just call myself a mohader I mean I really dont care. I feel its just one of those internet battles like the Gif and Gif fight. Its everlasting and I dont see it ever ending man. We just have to deal with it. I never hear kids on xbox saying they hack anymore because I am on steam and they cant afford to build or have a nice gaming PC. I feel safe.

(Not to be mean to the mature kids who steam game, I love you kids, not the console kids)
