Jailbreaking a PS3
To jailbreak a Playstation Three means you put a custom firmware that someone has made,on your ps3 so you can install various homebrew, and package files for different games!
What are the advantages and disadvantages of a jailbroken ps3?
Advantages of a jb PS3
Disadvantages
You can backup your game discs in PS3 built in storage. No need to worry about changing discs all the time whenever you want to load a new game. Also the game loads very faster than when loading from disc. In most citys PS3 games are available for renting, you can rent and copy the disc onto your PS3 or you can download them online and transfer it to your Ps3.
You can mod games
You can mod games
Disadvantages
The main disadvantage of PS3 Jailbreak is going online, there is a chance of being banned off of the PSN. You can unban yourself but you will have to buy a new console I.D.
If you have a Jailbroken PS3 you cant update it to latest the original firmware, because the latest original firmware replaces the Jailbroken custom firmware and removes the Jailbreak. PS3 firmware regularly updates to patch Jailbreak custom firmware to stop the service, so when this happens you are stuck waiting for the custom firmware update to match the original firmware update.

Difference between cex and dex
CEX is what all retail models come on, it is what you are used to seeing when you play your PS3, and I highly recommend that if you are completely new to modding that you stay with it until you are comfortable using your Jailbroken console. You CAN still RTM using CEX, RTM mod tools are actually easier to connect to CEX.
DEX is a developer firmware. Its harder to use in my opinion.

How to Jailbreak a PS3
First of all there are no CFW above 3.55,for example if you wanted to be on a 4.30.2 rebug cfw,you would have to be on 3.55 firmware before, you went to 4.30.2.
Okay with that out of the way,Here is what you will need.
1.PS3
2. Usb stick formated to fat 32
3. PS3 on fimware 3.55 or below
4. PS3 official 3.55 firmware(For 1st time jailbreakers)
5. Winrar
Now that you have downloaded a custom firmware,Extract it too your desktop or wherever by right clicking, then create a folder on your usb stick (fat 32)
called PS3. Then in that folder create another folder named UPDATE. Then Place your
update in there. So it should look like this.(Dont add an E)
X:/PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP
Put it in your ps3,go to system update on the XMB or the recovery menu and click Update Via Storage Media

Install PKG Files and App_home/ PS3 Game.

The one's I like are Blackbox FTP and Comgenies Awesome file manger these are the best for 3.55.now that we have downloaded Blackbox or Comgenies put it on the root of your usb stick. It should look like this.
X:/ComgeniesAwesomeFileManager.pkg
Also with Blackbox Ftp you will need to have filezilla and your ps3's ip address.

How do I know if I am able to downgrade my PS3?
The easiest way is to download Minimum Version Checker which is [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] you will see a "PS3UPDAT.PUP" file. Put that file in a folder named "UPDATE" and that folder in another folder named "PS3", now move the "PS3" folder to the root of your USB. Then go the "Settings" tab on your PS3, and click on "System Update". Choose "Update via Storage Media". It will detect your PS3 update as a "Version Check by Ifcaro" click "OK"
After it says "Please wait..." for a couple of second it will tell you your PS3 base firmware, as long as it says 3.55 or lower you are good to go!

How to Downgrade if you already have a CFW PS3.
1) Take '999' Downgrader or rogero downgrader, rename the file to 'PS3UPDAT.PUP and place it in your USB flashdrive in such format: USB FLASH DRIVE > PS3 > UPDATE >PS3UPDAT.PUP
2) Connect the USB to the PS3
3) Go to your PS3's XMB, go to Settings > System Update > Update via Storage Media and update your system from there to the '999' Downgrader.
4) Once updated, Launch Rebug Toolbox and go all the way to the right to 'Utilities' and ensure 'Toggle QA Flag' is not on. Then exit out of the toolbox holding 'O' on the controller.
5) Now transfer the 'ToggleQA.pkg' to the root of your USB and put it back in the PS3.
6) Now on the XMB, under 'Game' go to 'Package Manager' > Install Package Files > Standard Package Location > click on the 'ToggleQA.pkg' and install.
7) Once installed, go back under Game and launch the newly installed ToggleQA homebrew.
*your PS3 should launch the homebrew with the screen staying black, and while the screen is black, your PS3 will beep 3 times and return back to your XMB.
If you want to make sure QA flag was set, go to "Network Settings" then apply the following key combo (all at the same time):
L1 + L2 + L3 (press left stick) + R1 + R2 + dpad_down
You should see Edy Viewer, Debug Settings, and Install Package Files if done correctly.
8.) Take the 'Rebug 3.55.3 CFW', rename the file to 'PS3UPDAT.PUP and place it in your USB flashdrive in such format: USB FLASH DRIVE > PS3 > UPDATE >PS3UPDAT.PUP
Before continuing to step 9, please understand that you should NEVER have a game in the PS3 while installing CFW when ToggleQA is set.
9) Ensuring you have no disc in the drive, take that USB and connect it to your PS3 and simply update your PS3!Your now back to 3.55.3 rebug cfw.
2) Connect the USB to the PS3
3) Go to your PS3's XMB, go to Settings > System Update > Update via Storage Media and update your system from there to the '999' Downgrader.

Setting up your ps3 for rtm.
[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]
irst is to have a ethernet cable going from your PS3 to your router, and another cable going from your PC to your router.
The second way is to have a ethernet cable going from your PC to your PS3, you can only do this if your PC is wireless. If you want to use this method you will need to bridge your connections on your PC. To do this go Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and sharing center. On the side bar click network adapter settings. Highlight the local and wireless connections, right click and click bridge. If you can connect online on your ps3 you did it right.
If you are on DEX you will need to go settings > debug settings > network settings for debug and make sure its set to single settings.
How to rtm on wireless connection.
Firstly you want to connect the Ethernet cable to your ps3 then to your computer
Now once this is done go into network and sharing center then go into change adapter settings (you should see connections etc in here)
[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]
Now look for the connection that should be named Wireless networt connection (might have a number at the end if it, your connection should also be active as in show the name SSID of the router under it)
What you want to do now is right click on the connection and go into properties there should be 2 tabs at the top of the window, we need to click on the shareing tab, once in the shareing tab you should see 2 options that are activated by tick boxes, we need to tick the first box now before going apply under the first option there should be a drop down box you want to click on that and select your local network (it will be named local area connection or something similar) now click apply
[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]
Once you have done this head to your ps3 and go into network settings, you want to choose custom settings > wired connection now you don't need to set anything up just leave all the options the same now test the connection and obtaining ip address and Internet connection should be successful if not check that you choose the right shareing settings in your pc)
Now just follow normal real time modding procedures (you may have to configure the ip scanning in prodg target manager (my wireless ip is 192.168.0.x but when using Ethernet to computer method it becomes 192.168.137.x)
This method will work on any windows computer/laptop I can confirm it works on windows 7 and 8

Spoofers for CFW PS3'S
First off, big thanks to mrbrokeup for bringing this from NGU!!!
Secondly, this spoof DOES NOT SUPPORT COBRA OR REBUG FIRMWARES!!!
The developer Arachetous has released the spoof firmware 4.60 only for custom firmware 4.55; Cobra and Rebug are not supported.
Features v1.00 :
Compatible standard CFW 4.55 CEX only version
Not compatible Rebug or CFW Cobra edition or no-BD
Enabling and disabling spoof easily
Update v1.01 :
add : certificat / CAxx version 4.60
Operation
download and install the package
launch the application, choose enable or disable spoof 4.60
Then put yes to two successive questions (yes to reboot, yes to hard reboot).
Console restarts and okay.
Note: If your PS3 does not restart correctly. Do not panic, just re-install your CFW by the recovery mode.
In case you are not aware, what a Spoofer does is essentially trick your PS3 into thinking its on the latest version of OFW so that PSN access is then available. However there are still major risk of getting banned if you are on CFW. So respect the network!!!!
:!: NOTE This spoofer has semi-bricked peoples PS3's
Dont try spoofers on 3.55 CFW PS3 :!:

PS3 Common errors
My disc wont read-
Your disk not being read is a problem with the optical laser inside your blu-ray drive which can be solved by replacing said laser. Price isnt much to deal about (compared to many other things that could be replaced) because these run in at about $15-$30. I fix these as well as, new thermal paste.Pm me
Overheating-
Overheating is a serious problem, and if left unattended can internally damage your system, which may lead to it needing replaced. Overheating can be caused by prolonged gaming, or the system being on for too long. Overheating may also lead to a Yellow Light of Death or YLOD.
There are two common places that could be damaged, which is the Graphics Processing Unit or GPU or the Power Supply Unit or PSU.
If it is the GPU, the system will boot but not be able to display a video, since the graphics card is fried.
If it is the PSU, you will hear a clicking sound near where the PSU is located.
How to fix this is let the ps3 cool down/make sure its in an open area.
Send it to me to be re-thermal pasted.
Blink red light-
A blinking red light is caused by the system being overworked at a certain time, more when youre playing graphics-intensive games. Hard drive damage may occur if this is left untreated.
How to fix this is Shut down your console and remove all of the cables, including power. Sometimes a loose cable can even cause this problem, so be sure to check them all. Re-insert them, and if the light is still blinking, move to the next step.
Turn off your console and take out the hard drive, and re-insert. This will most likely solve the problem of the light, and it is also suggested to give the drive a good cleaning.
If the problem is caused by overheating, then turn off the console.
No display/Read disc fail
No display-Most of the time when your system fails to display a picture, users do not insert their cables properly. Be sure to check over your cables. If your system display is warped in some way, check your display settings to make sure it is optimised and set up correctly for your television
Read disc fail-When a PS3 fails to read a disk, it is one of two things. It could be the disk is scratched so you cannot play it, or the lens could have collected the right amount of dust. Cleaning the lens will most likely fix it if thats the case, and you can either decide to send your system to Sony, or attempt to do it yourself.
