A good option is heading down to your nearest PCworld and looking at the laptops there.
Although many people dislike them Advent computers are actually pretty good ive had my current laptop for 3 years and it can still handle games like battlefield 3 at around 45fps (Average)and I bought it for 370 so you should be able to get quite a good one.
Or instead if you wanted I could help you pick some parts for around 450 and you could build a desktop

Surface pro 1? I have a Surface pro 2 and it has pretty similar specs. I use it for Uni too and its great, can play a few games as well (Though I mainly use it for FM )

Some casual gaming would be quite nice come to think of it like some story mode games, obviously not for fps

i7 would be overkill if you're using it for just Uni work and watching movies online
