A rat is a Remote Administration Tool which allows people to control your pc over the internet. They can steal passwords, credit cards, and files if they feel the need to. It's just a horrid virus.

Remote Administration Tool.
Basically lets you control the victim's machine.
Has some other basic functions such as password grabber, webcam spying, mic spying, disabling things, etc.
Try to avoid them, they're kinda nasty and a lot of hassle. Plus if the controller is experienced they can cause a lot of issues.
Not unless the controller is viewing as you enter the info somewhere. Unlikely.
