So I've just finished watching the entire series of LOST and I'm having trouble understanding what the whole thing was. What was the island? What was John Locke near the end? Were all the "flashbacks", flashbacks or visions? Why did none of them know or remember anything until the end when they all had to touch each other to remember?
I've heard from numerous people that the island was like limbo or purgatory, or that is was all a dream after they had died. But I don't think it was either.
So if anyone can explain it I'd greatly appreciate it and I'll shoot you some Rep.

Theres about 8 ways it ended and the viewer is supposed to decide how it ended and what it was about, pretty stupid in my opinion

I think that Lost is a show you would have to watch several times to fully understand.

IMO, I think all of it was real. They were all destined to meet each other on this Island to see who the real new protector of the island is. I think that after all of them died (some way later in life) they all meet in the church and are able to move on once they were all in the afterlife.

I always thought the island was a type of purgatory and everyone died on the initial plane crash. That is why no one was looking for them/found them.
and in the final episode they all left purgatory and passed on.
I've watched the show twice and still find it a bit confusing but overall it was a fantastic show.

The producers want you to think what ever you want to think, it ended however you "think" it ended.

I couldn't agree more with you and that is what I thought too until I heard some other people's opinions.
Thank you everyone!

There was way to much turns in the story to give the ending an EXACT end.
As people have mentioned there is more than 1 possible ending but I think that it was more of them destined to meet on the island because if you watched it you will hear of a guy named Jacob who was the protector and that the 'caves' had all their names written on the wall but then some got crossed out because they didn't have what it takes to be the protector

Lost did have an exact ending.
EVERYTHING On the island happened.
Some of them died on the Island during the story.
Some of them escaped the island and died later on in their lives back in civilization.
Hurley stayed on the Island and protected it for God knows how long before he ended up dying as well.
Once they had ALL died, they met up in the Church, like a waiting room before they moved on.
Christian said that to cross over they have to be with the people who meant the most to them.
THEN they all went over into their afterlife, or whatever you believe in.
They tried to make the ending suit all religions and beliefs.
