Literate wrote Lost did have an exact ending.

EVERYTHING On the island happened.
Some of them died on the Island during the story.
Some of them escaped the island and died later on in their lives back in civilization.
Hurley stayed on the Island and protected it for God knows how long before he ended up dying as well.

Once they had ALL died, they met up in the Church, like a waiting room before they moved on.
Christian said that to cross over they have to be with the people who meant the most to them.

THEN they all went over into their afterlife, or whatever you believe in.
They tried to make the ending suit all religions and beliefs.

this is correct.

althought os sort of explain a bit more.

if you think of the final series, and the flashes where none of them knew each other, i believe this is supposed to be because after each of them died they were waiting in a purgatory, if you notice in these flashes they are all happy, maybe because as people describe your after life is your own happiest place. and as said above, in order for them to move on they needed to be with the people who meant the most to them. which was each other also that the time spent on the island was the most important and significant that any of them had experienced throughout their lives.

episode description from wikipedia.

"For different reasons, Jack and the Man in Black both use Desmond to extinguish the light at the heart of the island. The island starts disintegrating, but The Man in Black is also made mortal. Still desperate to escape, The Man in Black fights Jack and mortally wounds him, but with help from Kate, Jack kills him. Realizing his destiny, Jack sacrifices himself to relight the heart of the island, so his friends can escape on the Ajira plane. Hurley takes Jack's place as protector of the island and makes Ben the new advisor. The flash sideways is revealed to be a type of limbo, or holding pattern, for the main characters, where they reside until accepting their life and death, and are then able to "let go" and "move on" together."

The show was so confusing but still good.

Everything that happened on the island was REAL:

What was John Locke at the end?
John Locke had to die so the Man in the Suit aka the Black Smoke could be him.

The Flashbacks: [Flashbacks = Past] [Flashforwards = Future]
Season 1 - These flashbacks detail their lives prior to the plane crash.
Season 2 & 3 - All were flashbacks
Season 4 - Flashforwards reveal the identities and future actions of the so-called Oceanic Six, a group of survivors who have escaped the island and returned to their normal lives.
Season 5 - Had flashbacks and flashforwards.
Season 6 - They are not in the past or future of the original timeline, but represent an alternative reality where the Island has sunk and Oceanic 815 never crashes. You are seeing the events that could have happened had the plane never crashed.

It would be kinda cool if they made a movie so we could see what happened with Ben and Hurley on the island and the other survivors who left the island.
