Hey guys,
Just built my computer, runs great, everything is installed and working correctly except one thing... My second monitor is mirroring instead of extending and I don't know why. The main monitor is using a DVI input into the graphics card, and the second monitor has HDMI going into the graphics card. It is a MSI Radeon R9 270x OC 4gb with an MSI z97 gaming mobo. Windows 7 HP 64 bit. I have gone into BIOS and turned on multi monitor mode but it just made it mirror. I need to extend it. Will +rep to anyone who gives a working solution.

I know this is a tutorial for how to set up the mirroring thing, but using it may help you fix it. If you don't feel like looking at it then:

1
Open the "Start" menu on the computer's task bar.
2
Click "Control Panel."
3
Enter "display" into the search box at the top of the window that opens. Then, select "Connect to an External Display" from the options you see.
4
Change the appearance of your display in the "Multiple Displays" section. Click the down arrow, and a list of appearance options will open in a drop-down menu.
5
Click on "Duplicate These Displays." Then click "OK" to exit the setup.
Follow till step four, look for a different option

mine will not detect the second monitor. It only detects the secondary monitor (VGA Converted to HDMI) but it will not connect to the DVI one.
you tried clicking the detect?

Download this;

Your GPU drivers don't appear to be up to date.
edit- I'm pretty sure it's your drivers since you don't even know yourself. Don't bother with using CD's to install drivers as sometimes the CD won't have the latest drivers anyway. Just download and install from the link I posted above, that should work fine.
