So obviously try to change the folder title to $$ystemupdate first.
IF that still doesnt work (as it did not for me, i tried switching back and forth 10+ times)
Then here is an easy tut to make it pop up:

Steps:
1) Boot console.
2) Still no pop up? Then:
3) Go to games and launch your xex menu!
4) It will prompt you there is an update you have to do first

*be sure to have ethernet unplugged during all of this.

Is there a way to manually do the update without a USB? I've misplaced mine

Yes just plug in ethernet and use FTP to transfer it over network. (xbox neighborhood)
or you can use a transfer cable even.

Don't quote me. But I think that either JRunner or XeBuild has an option to send Avatar Data to your console via [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] .

Well it's not xebuild... only usb for xebuild

It is JRunner that I was thinking of. Never tried it before, but it's worth a shot.
