A BIOS is a basic input output system which controls hardware and software functions on the board at a basic level. Updating it can change the way the board behaves, for example adding in support for newer processors.

So wouldn't I also need an original Haswell processor to be able to update the bios? Because if they are compatible straight out of the box, I wouldn't be able to get into the OS to update the bios will I? Btw thanks for the support

Well when I dropped a Haswell refresh G3258 into a Maximus Gene Z87 it went into BIOS fine. Most BIOS' have tools on board to flash it from the USB drives.

So what would happen if I didn't update my bios?

Red-Bull wroteNothing serious. It might just need the update to boot for you to install an OS...Buxtyy wrote Well when I dropped a Haswell refresh G3258 into a Maximus Gene Z87 it went into BIOS fine. Most BIOS' have tools on board to flash it from the USB drives.

New motherboards do it within a few clicks.

Nothing really, if it works from the get go it'll likely be fine but updates are usually released to patch stability issues or fix odd bugs. Some boards even have tools you can download that allow you to flash the BIOS from within windows.

The GPU will output video but it won't be used to it's full potential; until drovers are installed.
But yes, the OS will need to go on first.
