I recently made the change from apple to a s5. Im familiar with using Ifunbox and know how to use ifile on apple but I cant figure out how to mod games on android. I dont understand what an apk file is. Ive downloaded a couple and tried opening them up using zarchiver but the games end up either being frozen on one screen or how it normally would start out with out mods. Does my phone need to be rooted or am I doing something wrong?

Apk is android's version of Apple's ipa files. You'd probably have better luck asking your questions about android in the android forum.

google XDA developers. it can be an almost invaluable resource for learning anything android. they even have sections devoted to specific devices.
also look up nextgenandroid. down in the game modz section, you can get games premodded with unlimited money, all unlocked, crap like that

the reason most of your apks are stalling is because you don't have the data files to go with them. you'll see on nextgenandroid, a lot of their files come with apks and obbs. the obb is the data, the apk is the app. if that makes sense. downloading both, the apk gets installed directly after download, the obb gets downloaded, then opened up with some sort of zip tool like winrar, and get moved to a specific location within your phones storage. after that, should work like a charm.

sorry for the wall of text.

also, I got an s5 too. look up zerolemon for good tempered glass screen protectors fairly cheap. took a razorblade to it when I first got it, not a scratch. and spigen make slim, durable cases.
