What? Why should he avoid an i5? What do you mean wait for it?The 5820k, 5930k and 5960x have already been released.

That's really, really overkill. You can get i7 preformance outta the New pentiums for 70 bucks or, like me, get it outta an i5.

For example, mine was ~1200, and it's more than enough for mid-high end gaming, i'm getting 4.4ghz..

100 bucks less, or, like the person above said, wait (for the price to drop) for the Haswell-E's.

Looking at the prices, forget the Haswell-e's..

No you can't. The Pentium only has 2 cores, the i7 has 4 cores with yperthreading which means BF4 and Crysis 3 benefit from the i7. The only time the Pentium matches an i7 is in a game that only makes use of 2 cores, which granted, is a lot of games but the Pentium does not match the i7 in anyway. Otherwise, their would be no reason to buy an i7. For OP's budget, the Pentium is out of the question.

OP-Why do you need an i7? For gaming, an i5 will be more than sufficient. VRAM makes no difference unless you're using multiple monitors. We need more info. What do you need? Keyboard, mouse, monitor or just the build? How many monitors will you be using?

Also, to Radeon-The 5960x is around $1000, well out of OP's budget. For OP's requirements, there is no need for an i7, unless it fits within his budget without having to sacrifice other components.

He's right, if you want the best GAMING preformance, get an i5, i have a 4690k and it's just awesome, and with intels new cooling with the 5th gen intel line, you'll get really good OCing capabilities, granted you have enough cooling.

See, i5's, while 7 IS bigger than 5, are made for GAMING.

i3-Low end, low power. Unsuitable for gaming, more or less.
i5-The Gamer's best choice, reasonable pricing, and great stability and power.
i7-Jack of all trades, master of none. i7's are great, but for gaming you'll want a processor that was really built for it, otherwise you'll drop an extra 100$ for a little more performance.

Vram wise, you shouldn't need more than 2gb, i have 1gb, that's more than enough, 4gb would be waaaayy overkill, unless you are editing+rendering videos and whatnot every day.

I will be editing for my work plus other stuff but i have multiple monitors so I may need it. But my question is why are i5s better for gaming than an i7?

How many monitors and what programs?

i5's are better for gaming because Intel's Hyper threading tech on the i7's, for 100 dollars more does little to no difference in gaming, but if you are in fact editing, than you may actually want to dish out money for an i7, strictly because of the hyper threading, essentially it adds another 4 threads for a possible 8..but again, this is for an extra 100 dollars..

Don't buy on clock speed alone, there is a lot more to consider, architecture, etc.
