This game has a LOT of grinding. So you should be prepared to do that whenever you hit level 20, if not sooner. Also, gear means EVERYTHING in this game, even more after level 20. There are several areas that can be "farmed" to achieve a high amount of loot drops, so you may do that. It is more along the lines of cheesing the system and not a legitimate way of playing, however it is a popular way, nonetheless.

The crucible is FILLED with shotguns and fusion rifles, so it's best to beat them back with the same guns. Also you should complete the campaign. Many people haven't but that's the fun part, campaign (you can complete it in like a day or two) and once your done grind strike or if you don't have good gear just play crucible and ALWAYS do bounties and save up your marks for something legendary. And other than that, have fun !
