I want to buy a new monitor but there is no point in me getting a monitor with 144hz refresh rate if my GPU can't handle it!

Don't bother with 144Hz anyway you won't notice the difference over a standard display.

They also say once you go black you never go back but do you wanna try that?

In all seriousness though you could say the same with resolutions. If you want a nicer experience get 1440p

I have 250GBP - I'm looking for a TN or VA panel I don't really mind what brand just as long as the colour is not washed. Prefer Amazon but don't really mind.

I'm not sure why you'd want TN as it can be washed out on some displays. IPS will give you crisper sharper colours at the expense of a very marginal amount of lag.
