Play some strikes dude you'll earn some light armor or you need to upgrade your current armor. hope this helped

Knock out a few of the Queen's Bounties then her Kill Orders that follow, you're guaranteed to get at least two different Legendary Armor pieces; level those up and your level will increase. Also, run the Vault of Glass and you'll get Ascendant Materials, hopefully Shards to upgrade any Legendary/Exotic Armor pieces you have. If you don't have an Exotic piece of armor, run strikes as much as possible before Sunday and purchase a piece for your character from Xur, The Agent of The Nine. You'll need at least 13 Strange Coins to purchase a piece of armor from him that will guarantee one for your character. You can also save up 23 Motes of Light to purchase an Exotic Engram from Xur but that can be for a random class.
