It is making you use skill points because you are not connected to the 2k servers. If you begin your MyCareer offline, then you are going to be using skill points. If you disconnect from the 2k servers mid game, it automatically saves and puts you to the menu. If you resume your MyCareer after that point, you will be switched to offline mode and thus, be using skill points.
