The best optical drive, is no optical drive. In this day and age you can do everything via USB or over networks.

Its always nice to have one incase you wanna burn or rip something of a disk.
E.g you wanna create a copy of a film you have on dvd onto your computer.

If anything, get a USB external one. You can hide it when people come round so it don't look like your stuck in the stone age.

If you wanted to rip music that implies people actually buy CD's these days. And as far as i'm aware, ripping DVD's in a watchable way bypasses copyright protection so you'd be better off torrenting that too.

In my case, I have only used it a few times. Re-installing Windows 7 on my system. As I don't want to have one; just in case.

I have an optical drive just because I needed to install windows, you can get an optical drive for around $15 so I suggest you just pick the cheapest one you can find.
