What should i do when i install a new motherboard, like when i boot the computer up, do i have to reinstall windows or should the hard drive format itself?

If the hard drive formatted, you would have nothing on it.

Yes you need to re-install windows. Back up your files now and then just put in the installation disc or boot-able USB and have your computer boot into one of them first. During the windows installation you can format the hard drive completely to allow for a new installation.

Make sure standoffs are in the right place, ground yourself, put it in at an angle to line up on the I/O slots, careful not to scrape the bottom, screw it in.

As far as os goes yes you need to install new in either situation. So make a bootable USB/CD before you undo your PC.

In some cases the OS may boot with no problems at all, but more often than not you will need to re-install. Now I always prefer to start a new OS one a new PC, because why put cluttered software on to brand new hardware...

If you choose to format your HDD, you will need to do that in the Windows installation under the "Custom" tab.
