I recently bought a new CPU and Motherboard, an Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 5 and an i5-4690K and my CPU max out sometimes when I do things that are a bit more strenuous than just a web browser, this is things like Microsoft Word, Battlefield 4 or even Minecraft!
The games or applications will play great for 5 to 10 minutes then they will just start freezing (15-20 second freeze) every so often.
I know it isn't performance issue with games because I have a GTX 980 Gigabyte G1 gaming and 8Gb of RAM.
Here is a link to my complete build: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]
Basically the question is can someone suggest a fix?

- All drivers are up to date
EIST is off
My PC freezes with and without an overclock to the CPU
It is NOT a result from my CPU throttling as my max temperature is 45 degrees centigrade
I have checked all my parts are in correctly

I had the same problem years ago, i finally solved it after doing so many things (this was a hard time -.-). It freezed after 5min for 1-5 seconds in each game.
- tested with other components (other RAM, other CPU and so on)
Finally i figured out, it was the graphic card. I used many tools for checking/repairing it, installed my whole computer new - 2 times. nothing helped.
Then i found a guy who had this problem and solved it. It was a corrupt graphic driver, which could not delete correctly after formatting your hard disc.
So what you need to do is (real quote from this guy):
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Boot into Safe Mode
2. Go into the Device Manager and choose "Update Driver", then "Browse My Computer For Driver Software", then "Let Me Pick From A List Of Device Drivers On My Computer", then choose the "Standard VGA" driver and then next. Do not re-boot yet. You'll have to do this for each video card you have.
3. Now go to the Control Panel and uninstall the graphics driver, control panel, physx, and the 3d driver if it is there.
4. While still in Safe Mode, run Driver Sweeper as an administrator and clean the display drivers and physx.
5. Navigate to the Nvidia folder and delete it.
6. This step was a key for me. Run CCleaner as an administrator and use the registry cleaning part of this program to delete a lot of Nvidia driver files that Driver Sweeper missed. 82 files for me! I had just run CCleaner a few days ago so as it turns out, every file CCleaner had found was an Nvidia file. I highly suggest that anyone who tries this look down through the list of files found during the scan and uncheck non-Nvidia files before deleting anything. Also, do the registry backup that you are prompted to right before deleting.
7. Now re-boot into the regular Windows (non safe-mode) and you will just be running on the generic VGA driver, without any heart stopping Freddy Kruger Drivers rearing their umm ... ugly head.
8. Install a driver you know is stable and re-boot again. You should be good to go.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You can use other tools like CCleaner (Glary Utilities would be also okay), but u need to use DriverSweeper, awesome tool.
This helped me. If you have questions, just tell me here

The problem has persisted after a driver update? But I am going to try this anyway I couldn't get the memtest86 to work since it was an ISO and I don't even have a working disk drive and the other download wanted to scan my USB devices.

Yes it persisted after reinstall all things, because the driver was corrupt and covered some memory areas, which could not be cleared.
Just the method with driversweeper solved the problem.
