Ok it's real easy and I been doing it for a month or two. I keep seeing post about need gold or 2 day trial. This way works and still does to this day.

Step 1.
Be at dashboard on the home tab (RIGHT BETWEEN BING AND SOCIAL) and sign out of all profiles.

Step 2.
Now looking at it the bottom left tab it says recent. (RIGHT NEXT TO IT IS WHAT YOU WANT TO CLICK ON) It says (Xbox 360 Explore Xbox live) click that.

Step 3.
Sign in. Now after you sign in on that page. The bottom right tab says
(Xbox live gold What's in gold) click that.

There you go a free trial on any account new or not.
You will need a credit card,paypal to do this!
Then after you put credit card info on to turn off auto renewal go to website it's easy.
This still works 12/5/14
