I figured that I would start off after 3 years of not even knowing this account existed with a thread about my Jeep.
Well, about two months ago, I bought a 1989 Jeep Cherokee Laredo (XJ) for $300 from a former english teacher of mine. It has a plethora of issues, none of which are major, it just has a lot of small issues here and there. Here's what it needs
shocks (Front has struts which I can't change)
oil leak fix (This isn't a big leak, it loses about a drop of oil per week)
spark plugs
wheel bearings (Not NEEDED yet, but I don't know how old the ones on it are, and it's always good to change them out)
breaks (I'm doing this tomorrow)
exhaust leak fix (This is more annoying than it is an issue. It sounds like a jalopy)
steering dampener
tire rod ends
plug cable
paint job (Paint is visibly faded and it has some small rust spots)
My plan for this thing is to put it on 31" tires with a 4" lift kit. Those numbers are very specific because that's the biggest I can go without changing the axles.
I've already done a compound and wax job on it, replaced the starter, and installed an OEM seatbelt for the driver seat, because it had a lap belt only, plasti-dipped the wheels because the alloy was ugly from 25 years of not really being cleaned, and painted some of the fender flares.
Here's a pic taken the night I got it:
Here's a pic of what it looked like right before I painted the fender flares. You can see why I did that.

Seems like a lot of work to be done with it.
But if you really like the Jeep, why not put the time into it.

31's on a 4 seem like it will look funny to me... But if thats the biggest you can go then I guess it will look decent....
I don't really know about grand Cherokees but the wranglers you don't have to change the axles.. Mine has 35's on a 4.

Will looks small with 31's and a 4" kit, grab some 35's, I know plenty of people running 35's with standard axles.

It isn't a grand Cherokee, it's a regular Cherokee Laredo. I was just told that I would need to switch the axles by the guy who did a tire balance on it.

Alright, I'll look into that. I agree that it would look small with that, but I'm trying to keep the cost down on it, as it still is a 25 year old jeep with 216K miles on it. I know jeeps can last a long time, but this one hasn't been cared for properly.
