I have a Asus Vx238h 1ms 60 Hz monitor. My pc arrives tomorrow with a 970, I heard that if the frames go above the monitors refresh rate its causes screen tear. I will be playing on high setting at 1080p most time and i know the 970 will go up more than 60 fps. So how to I fix this without getting a 144 Hz monitor?

One more question to get new drivers do i just go to nividas website?

Nvidia cards have the option "Adaptive Vsync" which will prevent the frame rate of the rendering engine exceeding the display's refresh rate.

To download the drivers go here: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

Be sure to select the correct product and OS.

Do you enable the option for that?

Tearing happens when the FPS is greater than, but not a multiple of, the screen's refresh rate. Vsync does prevent this, but causes frame skipping and because two frames are being buffered, there is a slight increase in input lag. Triple-buffered vsync can get rid of stuttering by adding another back buffer, which means a 60 Hz monitor won't cause FPS to be locked to 60, 30, 20, 15, 12, 10, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, or 1 FPS.

Whether you should use vsync depends on a lot of things like which game you're playing, your refresh rate, your performance, your personal preference, etc. Sometimes it's better to just have the tearing.
