Everytime i plugin my hitachi 250gb external harddrive it says malfunction and not recognised, it has nothing on it that i need is there anyway to get it working again?

Depending on the operating system you can check to see if its recognised by Disk Management (Windows) or Disk Utility (OSX).

windows 8 and no it doesnt show up on disc management

If your drive is one where you can open the caddy without breaking it, you could try plugging the bare drive from that directly into your PC. That would rule out any external power supply/controller error.
