I jailbroke my 4S when I had it, the jailbreak itself will not slow your phone.

Exactly what zeph said. I had an iPhone 4S jailbroken and it ran smooth. But it also depends on what you put on it. A normal iPhone 4 on iOS 7 wouldn't be able to run properly, but the 4S is fine!

The problem is that he is using an iPhone 4S, which may not run very good on the iOS8 software while jailbroken.

Most certainly! I'm not up to date on the ability to jailbreak the iPhone 6, but if there is a jailbreak out, it will run very smoothly.

he is already on ios 8 so by updating to the latest firmware it eliminates bugs.
