Does anyone know why this happens? It's been doing it since day one and my dad yells at me because he thinks I messed it up and I just plug it in and it works fine.

That could be to do with the power settings of the laptop. You can manage the power settings in the control panel and check to see if the wireless adapter is set to power saving instead of normal or higher.

i think the problem may be that your computers powers scheme is set to maximize battery life this turns things off like wifi off when on battery power. to fix this you can go to power setting and customize it. Control Panel> Hardware and Sound> Power Options> Edit Plan Settings there's a button on this screen "change advanced power settings". Click it and have a look at the settings, particularly "wireless adapter settings".
