Level 20 will be your soul mate.......
Complete all missions gaining xp which leads to armor.....armor with lights progresses more through level 20......missions that's all do missions till level 20! Hope that helped

Do your bounties along with your story missions until you hit 20, and from there on I'd personally do whatever you feel like doing. Legendary/Exotic gear can be earned from Strikes, the crucible, and from engrams.

I've been playing since the 24th, and the only Exotic I've gotten is from a legendary engram I bought off Xur this week. :C

Bounties and crucible. Just do a couple story missions and level up hop on crucible level up more and when bored of crucible hop back on story and repeat. Also best way to earn legendary/exotics is strikes. Once you hit 26/27 I recommend you doing Vault of Glass on normal just to get more gear/weapons. Also leveling up a faction once you hit level 20 wouldn't hurt at all. New Monarchy is a pretty good one as they have a beast auto rifle they sell called vanguisher
