You can get skins or crates from playing the game and getting drops at the end of games although it is quite rare to get them and I think you only get 2 skins and 2 crates every week and alot of the time the skins are worthless but you might be lucky, you can sell these skins and crates and then buy skins on the steam marketplace or you can just add money to your steam wallet and purchase skins from the market that way. You can also open the crates with keys which cost money and then you have a chance to get skins that way and if your lucky you may get a knife and they sell for up to 30 - around 1000.
