Only way to get rid of it is to update, or you could jailbreak.

Try springtomize 3. There is an option to remove update badges.

Hmmm, maybe it doesn't work with iOS 8, I thought it would've. A tweak called mikoto (from [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] ) has the option to disable software update. It's a great tweak with loads of features.
