I have a Lenovo thinkpad e540 and it does not want to connect to the wifi, but will work when the Ethernet is plugged in. It says that the wifi is not turned on, but there is no external switch.

Make sure you network drivers are still enabled (or installed), do this by going to your device manager.
If they are still running, then I would try to see if you have a troubleshoot option, right click your WiFi and click "Troubleshoot problems."

The wifi might be off on your laptop
Press 'Fn' + F8. I think it's F8, which ever function key has the wifi icon.

He mihgt have clicke3d a button that turned the actual wifi off look in your f keys and cntrl + f key that has a wifi symbol and should tell whether on or off also try resseting router by unpluggin or disconnect and reconnect
