I was thinking of Dog Soldiers.
It's about a group of soldiers who get stranded on a training exercise in Scotland.
They are attacked by werewolves and a woman lets them stay in her home and they have to defend themselves.

I would suggest any of these.
- The Road:
A man and his son trek across post-apocalyptic America after all animals and crops have died. This is really realistic and depressing though.
- 127 Hours:
A climber gets his arm stuck against the side of a canyon by a boulder and has to survive.
Based on a true story as well.
- Life of Pi:
A boy has to share a lifeboat with a tiger after the ship he was on sinks.
- Cast Away:
A postal service worker is in a plane crash and ends up stranded on an Island where he has to survive.
- Book of Eli:
A man carries the Bible across post-apocalyptic America and has to deal with bandits. This is more of an action, but it's still a brilliant film.
- Children of Men:
A man has to get a pregnant woman to the coast in a near apocalypse future where women are infertile and society has collapsed.
- Cloverfield:
Shot in the hand-held camera style, a group of 20-somethings have to make it out of New York city when a giant monster attacks. It sounds silly, but this is one of the best monster movies ever made in my opinion.
- The Crazies:
A sheriff has to get his wife out of a town where everyone has gone crazy. Think zombies, but much creepier, and they actually use weapons. Plus they run. Probably the scariest zombie-esque movie ever made.
- War of the Worlds:
A man has to get his son and daughter back to their mother after alien tripods rise out of the ground and start harvesting/disintegrating humans.
