Hi,

First, moderators, pardon me of I put this in the wrong forum.

So I used to not own a nice phone, and I owned a Apple Ipod touch 4G, and I jail broke it. And for Christmas and I want to know, what is rooting? I own a Galaxy S5 and I kinda want to root it.
So my question is,
What is rooting? is it the same as jailbreaking?
is it worth it?

-EDIT-
I plan on rooting my S5 when I get home, any must have apps or recommended that I need?

Thanks very much!

blah, iphones are terrible! ive had them and now have an s5, so much better and alot more features. rooting is basically the same as jailbrakeing. you have access to all files and can edit anything. for more info look it up and do some research, maybe watch some youtube videos.

iPhones being terrible is an opinion which is biased. But I agree Galaxies do offer more options than iPhones do, but iphone is more simplistic and easy to use. Jailbreaking is also easier than rooting.

Jailbreaking and Rooting pretty much offer the same thing, some people claim rooting offers a bit more than jailbreaking but I don't think its that much of a difference. But basically they both give you access to the host files and grant you privileges that you wouldn't normally have.

With Rooting you can do much more than Jailbreaking.

It's still basically the same thing. But with Rooting you're granted access to EVERY file. (Atleast from my basic understanding)
While Jailbreaking you still cannot edit certain files.

They are basically the same thing, although in my opinion rooting is more difficult to accomplish. I have an iPhone 6 and i love it. switched from a galaxy note 4.

Basically when you root a android, you can almost do the impossible. from deleting bloatware to installing a custom ROM. I have a HTC One E8 and i have to say, having it rooted is so fun, but don't break it because your warranty no longewr exists once you root it

Android can be quite complex to a new user so research is key!

Imagine rooting your android phone as giving yourself admin rights to a windows PC. It does the same thing, lets you tweak things to your liking.

If you want to go real deep, you can look into custom ROM's and kernels.

The ROM is the operating system for your phone. You can have custom one to suit your needs which include being on the latest operating system such as Lollipop or having a custom ROM of one you already own. E.G. I have SlimKat - A cut down version of KitKat [4.4.4 os] which improves battery life from the stock since it gets rid of all the junk apps.

If your a tweaker, and know your stuff, Android is a great place to be and your practically not limited to what you can do.

Not that I'm aware of. You have obviously never had an iDevice... For apple you download a single program, plug in your device, press jailbreak. And every jailbreak program covers a large variety of iOS firmwares and devices. Whereas on android there's more android device than apple, therefore there's different programs that you could get mixed up with if you aren't experienced with android.
