German prosecutors have charged a 94-year-old man with 3,681 counts of accessory to murder on allegations he served in the Nazi death camp Auschwitz.

Schwerin prosecutors' spokesman Stefan Urbanek said Monday the suspect was an SS sergeant who served as a medic in Auschwitz in an SS hospital. In that role, Urbanek said, the man helped the extermination camp function and could thus be charged as an accessory to the 1944 killings.

Urbanek wouldn't release the suspect's name in line with privacy laws. The man is one of 30 former Auschwitz suspects against whom federal investigators recommended in 2013 that state prosecutors pursue charges under a new precedent in German law. His attorney, Peter-Michael Diestel, told the Bild newspaper there's no evidence of any "concrete criminal act" by his client.

I understand that what he did is horrific, but the man is 94 years old for Christs sake. What else can they do to him? He probably only has a few more years in him as it is, why make it even worse?

he is 94 years old, this is dumb, why would they just now come after him after like 71 years this is retarded in my opinion. and i am not saying that he doesn't deserve to die because he does, but they could have charged him when he was in his 50's or something... *5arg5*

You're acting like he could choose not to do these things, Sure he's terrible but I am certain if you had to follow orders or get killed yourself you'd think about yourself before them.

Is it bad that I am torn? On one hand, he is old and is most likely not a threat anymore. On the other, does it not send a message of old people can get away with just about anything if this man is pardoned from the crimes? I guess it comes down to, what did these medics do? If he just helped people, give him a pass. If he hurt people or set up things for people to get hurt or die, then charge him. I know I am probably being too picky though. I may have to lean towards charging him. If they have proof he was a part of the camp, then he did the crime.

Um, many people chose not to be a Nazi.... Nazis were only 7% of Germans, so think about it. He enjoyed everything he did.

Lots of them didn't consider themselves to be Nazi's, but if they refused to serve they risked imprisonment or death.
You also have to remember that almost all of the media in Germany from the mid-1930's to the mid 1940's was propaganda. An argument could be made that many of them were tricked into fighting for an ideology they might have otherwise disagreed with.

It's against international law to torture someone, not to mention hes an old man he's more than likely not a threat anymore. So that is highly inappropriate.

I'm not to sure how the judicial system works in Germany, but I know after about 10 years I believe it is; in America if you commit a crime they can't charge you due to the fact that X amount of time has gone by.

He's also 94, just let him live his life. He more than likely was brainwashed by the propaganda of the Nazi's.
