The 970 is an amazing card that will max all current AAA games and will do for a few years to come. I would get one tbh. Those $200 are cheaper than getting a new card.

If you're gaming on a single 1080p panel, the 960 will max out all games and sit at 55+ FPS for even AAA titles. 960 is a 1080p card. The 970 is going to be hella useful in case you upgrade to 1440p, or even 4k or if you decide to run multiple monitors or use a panel with a higher refresh rate.
