I'm currently attending college and have multiple internet devices(computer/laptop/xbox) etc that I want to connect to the internet simultaneously via ethernet. However, my dorm room only has one ethernet port. I thought I could use a switch but apparently that only works if its plugged straight into a modem, not the wall. From what I understand my best option now is to buy a router, I think? I'm not sure if I need a router or a modem or something completely different or if any of that would even work just plugging it into the wall...any help is appreciated! Thank you.

Get a cheap little router for your dorm, but make sure its password protected.

switches work on network points.
I've got a TP-link 16port gigabit switch on my desk in work.
I go from the network point into port 1 then port 2 goes from the switch to my pc. The rest of the ports are used to configure access points for me.
