1.4 MK4 Golf. cheap to buy and reasonably priced on insurance, also if later down the line you decide to go the modification route they're pretty easy to modify being that 1. they're German (auto's and Ramstein is the only thing Germany actually done right) and 2. you can pretty much rebuild the whole car with a basic socket set and a workshop manual, which makes modifying and general maintenance pathetically easy.


You can't go wrong with a VW and i challenge anyone to prove me wrong :thumbsup:

Anything 1.2L or less tbh. Above 1.2L and insurance costs start to raise from an already too high level. Anything from VW or Seat would be a good bet. Cheap(ish) to buy, cheap to run, cheap to repair and cheap(ish) to insure.

Golf's are not cheap to insure at all.

If you want style, performance and cheap prices

1.2 Vauxhall corsa 2007 onwards around 2500

or

1.2 Ford Fiesta

Both incredibly cheap on fuel,Insurance and parts.

Yes, they are. Insurance in the UK is ridiculous but golf's are on the 'better' side. They're more expensive than say a Seat Arosa or VW Lupo but still moderately reasonable to insure. Though, it depends a lot on your area. Corsa's are typically more expensive to insure. A lot of young drivers have corsa's because they think that they're good cheap, cars and insurance for corsa's has risen a lot in the past year or two because of this. Fiesta's are meh. If you can find one for a good price, then it may be worth it.

I've been looking because I'm getting a car soon as well.
Have a look at Vauxhall Corsa'. You can get one with millions of miles for £2500 and alloy wheels which is okay for a first car. They look nice as well.
You could also have a look at the old mk6 Ford Fiestas for £2500?
On the corsa, the insurance will be about £2000 aswell for a first time driver with no no-claims bonus but with a named driver.
Ingenie seems the best insurer but you're going to have to have a black box fitted?

For UK insurance prices we do not have a variety of cars to pick from.

Here are some examples:

VW Polo 1.0 or 1.2
Peugeot 106 1.1
Renault Cleo 1.2
Vauxhall Corsa 1.0 or 1.2
Ford Fiesta 1.2


None of them will be stunning but it is a learner car, it shouldn't be expensive. All these cars should be relatively cheap to insure, make sure not to buy a pig that will fail the MOT.

Check under the wheel arches for rust and other obvious places as this can lead to MOT failure.
