I have to go with what your 'people' said my friend. Its easier and much more efficent to just get a newer car or perhaps a car that doesn't have that much of a problems. On a more personal side, I hate VW simply because they talk about how they have cars with 100K miles on the streets but none of them are functioning correctly lmao.

Anything that needs a head gasket are a pain in the butt its worth the scrap value man

It's hard to tell because the smoke can be any number problems from as simple as an oil leak or bad exhaust to a bad head gasket. If the car has a straight body with decent paint and not a lot of rust I would take it for 300 bucks, I could part it out for more than that if it came down to it lol.
