That's why I knew it wasn't a thief.
Sometimes they do knock the door to see if anyone's in, but as I've got my car outside and bedroom light on, I think they get the hint.

May never know some people do it to see if anyone is home, A buddy had someone knock on his door while he was in his bedroom and he ignored it went downstairs and some one was trying to enter the house.

This had me dying out laughing you about that life lol.

This happened to me on Saturday night aswell but It turned out it was just my mate who had a little much to drink and fell out with his girlfriend needed a place to stay the night.

This has literally just happened to me.

it's 3am and I'm woken up by my door being knocked loudly, at first I thought it was a dream and ignored it but ten minutes later it happened again. This time being as stupid as I am, I went to answer it and opened the door slightly and shouted to see who it was, I got no answer so slammed the door shut and rang the police.
it took them 30 mins to arrive and by this time my door had been knocked another 3 times while I sat in the living shaking.
The police arrived and had a chat with me and explained how something similar happened earlier in the night and if it happened again to ignore it, it's now 4am and luckily they haven't knocked again.

What would you do if a stranger knocked on your door late at night?

THIS GOES FOR EVERYBODY! When your door is being knocked on at weird times of the day it could very well possibly mean that burglars are testing to see whether there are any people in the house. They knock multiple times to make sure that know one is home and if you do not make your self known they may break in. This used to be a trend in the city that i lived in and was a pretty big problem. When and if this happens to you make sure that you make your self known whether that means turning on the outside light or making sound. DO NOT HESITATE to call the police if this happens.
