Next step up from a 285 would be a 290 for £200, or a GTX 970 for about £250.

Drop the cooler for now. Stock cooler is nasty, ugly, and loud but it'll suffice, and you'd be better off with an SSD than a nicer cooler IMHO. Install your OS and favourite games/programs to the SSD, add the cooler at a later date if you want to.

AMD's 300 series is coming fairly soon so a lot of the 200 series cards are gone, there were a few really good 285 deals but they're gone now so if there are any deals, you guys will need to grab them fairly quickly. As of now, the best I can see is a 285 for £145, here;

It seems like amd is killing of their 200 series cards with the 300 being released in a couple of weeks.

At the moment your next best option for the same price would be the 270x
