The non-reference brand 970 mainly just have that brand's cooler design & their overclock on it. With the reference design it's all stock speed with the stock cooler, if you plan on overclocking it yourself, the only main difference is the cooler & possible a back plate.

The stock cooler is a blower design, meaning it take air in from the case, and blows it out the back. It's not the "Best" for overclocking but you can still get some decent OC on it.

It is not recommended as after-market has better options and in the case of the 960, some even come with a better PCB, or more VRAM.

It is always a good idea to wait after a new GPU release to see what brand has the best performance without breaking the bank.

970's have been out a few months now dude... all results are up and everything has been tried and tested.

I can personally recommend the G1 Gaming, it is a dank card that doesn't require overclocking as it has the highest boost of 1340MHz. I love mine.

That was more meant as a tip rather than a suggestion for a 970.

980Ti is "new" and not many non-reference options are currently available for purchase.

But it's clear in the title, OP isn't on about the 980 Ti
plus, with the current vendors it's easy to assume which is going to be a good card or not by looking at the 970/980 performance from each vendor.
