what do people use to record there gameplay in hd and upload to youtube

is there a program or do people use elgatos ?

Most people will use software to record PC games, a few programs I know are
Shadowplay (requires a Nvidia GPU)
Fraps
MSI afterburner.

Myself I use shadowplay because it records in good quality and hits performance the least.
