I have a new Xbox One that should be arriving in the mail tomorrow, my first Xbox console, in fact. I tried researching this question, but only came up with information on system updates, so I was wondering, does the Xbox One automatically download game updates while in standby (Instant-On) mode? If it does, does it require an Xbox Live Gold subscription? One of the things that irks me about the PS4 is that to automatically update games in Rest Mode, a Playstation Plus subscription is required.

Yes the Xbox One will automatically update your games as long as if you have that setting turned "On" now if you have it off it won't work obviously.
Does it require an Xbox Live Subscription? No.

There is a non power saving option, Its very helpful, It downloads system updates and downloads them while the system is off.
