Currently the 970 is cheaper.

What is your budget and currency?
Do you need mouse, monitor & keyboard?

Can add another 970 in SLI later on, if you want the price to be a little lower then swap out the SSD for a cheaper one.

Could I not get a cheaper motherboard? And would the PSU not need to be bigger to support a second 390?

You could get a cheaper Mobo however you wont get SLI support for cheaper than a Krait on an Intel socket.

If you wanted SLI 390's then yes you would need to upgrade the PSU however with SLI 970's you wouldn't and would only need to use a Molex to 6 pin +2 adapter which normally comes with the GPU. If not then you can pick them up for a couple of quid.

But why would I need SLI support with the 390? Isn't it crossfire?

Yes it is crossfire and that's my mistake, crossfire for AMD GPU's and SLI for Nvidia GPU's.
