The Americans call a lot of things different. It's just countries. You can't explain why they call it that and we call it this. It's just what it is.

What I'm referring to is the wanna-be Europeans in our country who call soccer football.

The way i see it is that if you are in the us football is football and soccer is soccer, but if your somewhere else then soccer is football, you just kinda go with the flow.

Embassy_Modding wrote Its football lets be real here, you kick a ball with your foot. You dont sick a pair of socks on and run about a pitch. Most of the countrys in the world call it football, just the americans have to be different as useal
I wish people like you would actually do some research before posting ignorant comments... The British first adopted the term "soccer" in around the late 19th century. The term "soccer" comes from the shortening of "association football". They added "-er" to "soc" in "association football". According to the etymology this is similar in how rugby is sometimes called rugger.

If you don't believe me, take some time and grab an Oxford dictionary. Look up the term "soccer", and read off the etymology of the word.

As for Americans calling it football, it makes absolutely no sense, unless you are around primarily Brits. If you are having a conversation with a fellow American, don't call it football. It's soccer. Football in the states is entirely different than the football in every other country. We can't have 2 different games of football.
