In Washington there is a big push to raise minimum wage to $15 an hour! I don't get it, these people are absolutely insane. Our minimum wage is one of the highest in the nation at $9.47. Be grateful, places like Georgia have a minimum wage of $5.15 an hour! Why do these people want $15 an hour? Because they think their work is worth more. Well, let's look at this circle real quick.

Let's say some mythical way a gas station, or what ever can afford to pay you over 50% more in wages. There are a lot of skilled labor positions making about $15 an hour, and they don't get that 50% pay increase. What are we going to see? People will quit their position AND those who do stay are now working at minimum wage, so you will see MORE homeless people. This is the same for anyone making over $15 an hour, they don't get a 50% pay increase, and they are worth more than you flipping burgers at Mcdonalds.

Now we all know that a small company such as a locally owned gas station, or food joint can't afford that 50% pay increase, so one of two things will happen. They will go under, or they will charge you more. Now your $4 burger is $6. People now can't afford that, so less people are buying, so they will go under. The business will be done.

While we are talking price increase, it's not just your wages that increase, the cost of living does too. In my area gas is $2.89 a gallon, so for the sake of easy numbers, let's say $3 a gallon. Now with a 50% pay increase, gas in my area will be $4.50 a gallon (add 50% to your gas prices too). Milk will be $6 per gallon, that $25k car you see today will be $50k etc.

You have 100k in your savings account? Cool, but now it is worth 50k because these minimum wage workers got a 50% pay increase.

You don't get something for nothing guys. Working at Mcdonalds or any minimum wage job is an entry level job. You aren't supposed to be able to raise a family on that job. It is simple a job to get you some skill to get into a job that is meant for you to be able to support a family on. Honestly, If I owned a store that paid you minimum wage (especially in Washington) and you asked for a 50% pay increase, I would laugh at you and tell you to find a new job. I would fire you on the spot. In today's economy there are 5 people looking for your job, so be grateful you have a job.

It irritates me when I see people in the US/UK complaining about the minimum wage is to low, go anywhere else in the world and you will be extremely grateful for your countries minimum wage, trust me. I moved from the UK to South Africa, (Bare in mind the pound is RIDICULOUSLY strong against the rand, and the rand is just a weak currency in general...) and I now truly miss the minimum wage in the UK, because they pay peanuts here. As 002 mentioned, your getting paid a minimum wage because its a entry level job, you cant work at KFC and expect a 6 figure salary. People should be grateful they have a job and more importantly have an income, because certain places in the world, jobs are beyond scarce.

Could there be problems with this? Sure, but I think it is the only way to go. I will say, 15 an hour does seem pretty high (at least in some smaller areas), but I don't know the math and statistics people are using to get that number. I do think that the minimum wage should be quite higher than it is now though. The top people in corporations are taking more of the money. That is where the problem lies. I've heard, "People working 40 hours a week shouldn't be living in poverty." I can't disagree with that even if they are just "flipping burgers." The burger places are worth a lot of money. They would survive. It is the smaller mom and pop shops that I wonder about.

The minimum wage here in Tennessee is $7.25 an hour. That's what I made last summer, and I had no problem with it. Even with $7.25 an hour, I had plenty of money to buy what I wanted on pay day, only with 30 hours a week. Granted I was only 16 then, but it was still plenty.

If you have to pay mortgage on a house, car payments, etc. I can see why you would want more, but usually a grown adult with a decent job isn't being paid minimum wage.

it's funny that people who flip burgers are arguing to raise the minimum wage and yet soldiers aren't complaining about their pay and yet they put their lives on the line no questions ask.

Minimum wage jobs are associated with students or younger people looking for part time work while studying etc. NOT life time long jobs.

Edit: Also minimum wage for people with minimal skills. Not our fault you dropped out of education or whatever.

When you increase the amount of money that goes into labor costs you're going to see either employees cut, more responsibilities per employee, fewer hours per employee, or price increases.

I personally think minimum wage should be a living wage, like it was when it was first introduced. The value of the dollar has gone down, but the pay rate hasn't seen the same change.

For the people saying minimum wage is fine, you haven't seen some of the troubles people have had. I can personally tell you life sucks and not everything works out the way you planned. A lot of things can happen in a short period of time, and people are forced to work multiple jobs and a lot of hours just to have a place to sleep.

converted, i'm on about $10.12 USD per hour but I work in a restaurant and I am the assistant chef, so while the head chef cooks and does the final assembly of the food, I'm the one who does everything else, I do all sides, starters, desserts, a lot of prep for the head chef to use for the naked burgers (no bun, a bed of lettuce and veg etc) and yeah. Pay isn't bad for a part timer.

As for minimum to be put up to $15 per hour, stupid and will not work out in the long run.
