I mainly game, but do some photo/ video editing, and recording(nothing too crazy) . I was considering a 4790k for my next build. But i was wondering how long a 4core cpu will be able to play games for in the future. I am able to afford a x99 chipset and that stuff but was t sure if I'm gonna need it. What do you guys think? X99 or z97

The i7 4790k will not have any issues running games in the future and video editing etc.

Get a Z170 motherboard with a Intel core I7 6700 (Skylake) It should handle well in the future, games mainly use GPU than CPU

The Z97 chips and chipsets will still be around for a good while. So if you want to save yourself some money, get a E3-1231 and a H97 board and that will last you a good while.

But if you have money to burn, jump on Skylake...

If you can afford X99 and you're going to use it for editing, recording, etc. Surely more cores which the 5820k has will be beneficial to you.

The 4790k it pretty much an 8 core as it has Hyper-Threading.

I'd get the new 6700 though.

Just because it has hyper threading doesn't mean the hyper threaded cores are like physical cores. That's like saying a dual core i3 with HT is equal to an i5 with four actual cores, it's just not.

Nope. I didn't mean that. I'm talking theoretically, 2 threads for each physical core meaning gets the work done twice as quick.

From what I've read online the new series of CPUs aren't worth it for the price/performance ratio.
