SLI 970's makes sense if the OP wants to buy one now and then if he needs one later, then he can do.

The 390's power draw doesn't allow for this so if the OP wanted to buy a 390 now and then another later, then he will also have to buy another PSU.

Did OP ask for a more efficient card? No. He asked for an upgrade so that he can play new games at ultra settings. Now, a single GTX 970 won't even play GTA V maxed out at 60FPS on a 1080p panel, a 390 will however. It also has better Win10 support and DX12 support. Oh, and Xiggy, before you cry about how "no one cares about DX12", they do, and you should too. Just because you don't give a shit, doesn't mean other people don't, and it especially doesn't mean you should recommend a worse card to a user. The reason these sections exist is so that users can come here and get help, not so you can bitch and moan about having a different opinion and then flame @ me.

A good quality 450W unit is more than enough to run a GTX 970, or R9 390 rig. Just because the GTX 970 is more efficient, doesn't make it better, and it doesn't mean the 390 is inefficient. Using slightly less power isn't a justification for buying a more expensive, poorer performing, less supported GPU.

He'd be better off with a single Fury, which he could buy now if need be, as I said. XFire 390's>SLI 970's anyway, especially since the 390's scale better than the 970's do. A PSU upgrade isn't that much of a hassle, nor is it a bad thing.

wow thanks for the quick replies guys, and from what i gathered here, yes i will eventually want 2 GPUS so i think the gtx 970 is the better option. meaning i don't have to spend more on another PSU? thankyou for the help!

SLI 970s is a good choice and it will be a bit more efficient. However, if you want better performance in games then a single 390 would be a good choice, too. They are similar in performance, but I would personally get the 390 as it will last longer and the 8gb of VRAM will be beneficial for newer, more demanding games.

They are both very good cards.

You'll regret it. See, the difference here is that I have experience with SLI 970s, unlike everyone else on this thread. I got rid of a 970 because it was a waste having two of them, when there are higher end GPUs out now. If you're going to need the performance of a 970 in some time, get a Fury now instead. I'd trade my Strix 970 and some cash for a 390 at this point because the 390 is a better card, and that's just a fact. It's not inefficient and if you want support to add a 2nd, you have a £500 budget, that's more than enough for a 390 and new PSU now so that you can have XFire support. I have no idea why people are acting like PSU upgrades are a huge hassle, they're not. I've upgraded mine twice in the last year. You could easily get a 390 and a more efficient PSU, that will support XFire.

What are you talking about. I sold a 970 because as I said, SLI 970s are a poor choice now. A single Fury out-performs SLI 970s for a lower price, and the 390 out-performs thr 970 for a lower cost. Deny it all you want, but you're wrong. Also,don't try to act like you know more about me.. than me, you don't.
