I was wondering if there is a real performance difference between the two for heavy gaming and modding

The 390x is clocked a bit higher. Is it worth it? Not at all. Its over $100 more for a little increase.

Thank you for the reply I've been wondering that for a while and it's nice that I can save $100 on my build

Yeah, it is not worth it over the 390, at all. You will gain only about 1-2 FPS in gaming. 1-2 FPS is not worth $400 in my book.

390 Is much better bang for buck,
As everyone has said the FPS Gain is so minimal with the 390X Its a pointless card tbh. Its a card for people to say they have when in reality there is not real need for it in ur area.

That's not entirely true the 390x has increased Stream Processors and Texture units but the 390 is still a better buy, it's a tiny performance gain and it's possible to unlock a the 390 and get a 390x out of it.

390. No point wasting money on a 390x. Much the same as the GTX 980 isn't worth the premium over a GTX 970. You can try to unlock the cores on a 390 anyway. Won't work on all of them though, so depends on your luck.
