i was looking at buying a used audi in the near future and i've never owned a car before. i was just curious what sort of things should i be doing prior to actually buying it (because when i pay for it, i'll be paying for it in full). i know test driving it is an absolute must. my dad said i should take it to a mechanic to make sure everything is okay with it; but for that would i do it on the test drive or a different time. any and all advice is appreciated.

also, please don't think that i'm some snobby rich kid that is having mommy and daddy pay off the car. i'm paying it off myself and i want something to be proud of owning and audi is my favorite make.

Well i haven't owned a lot of cars myself but my dad has owned LOADS, never had a mechanic look at them and never had a problem. Just look for obvious things like the condition of the car, if it's all bashed up... a previous owner may have thrashed it.

Also look under the hood at some levels (Oil for example), others will say different but i myself have never had a problem.

Also make sure you have a good test drive to let the car warm up and once warm don't be afraid to give it a little rev as this can also show stuff. Once done check the oil again to make sure you don't have a oil drinker!

Here in New York, unless you grab it from a dealershipt, Take it to a mechanic, Because we use salt here, So I take cars to the mechanic so I can see underneath and whats rusted out and whats not. But just because it looks great and drives great means nothing, Ive had friends buy cars than ran great when they bought and they it turned out to be a real POS...I would highly recommend taking your business to a dealership, as they offer warranties, Id hate for you to spend 5k on a car and the next day your engine blows.

be careful of buying used Audi's anything 140k-180k+ miles avoid. they may be in good condition and drive well but Audi's do not have a long drive life. Unless you're willing to pay big money to keep it running. They blow through turbos quite fast and I would imagine that you'll be looking at A4's

But yeah, totally forgot about miles lol. But year really doesn't matter, i can go get a motorbike with 0 miles that was made in 1999 and it'll feel like new (As long as it was stored properly).

I feel that rust is pretty obvious; check wheel arches and general places underneath.

Will be a good idea to have a good check of the whole underneath and make sure the car isn't leaking anything (Look where the car has been sat)

Get a good warranty, since your buying in full interest rate doesn't matter. Check how much insurance will be with the car you choose before you buy, and please for the love of God if it has stickers make them take it off before you buy, every dealership hides scratches and dents with them. Just take a look around the car and see if you like the quality and check under the hood.
