However, that's not true, they just work harder for less than most of our country.

Respect to a lot of them.
But that's unfair. People that are leaving school or at college like me have no jobs to go into! Yeah it's great that they work harder for less but it's OUR country at least provide US with jobs first. We should be top priority (not being mean).

They were born in a country not as fortunate as us. Who has the right to say they can't take refuge in a safer country such as the UK and work hard to be allowed to stay their?

For the record I am 17 who needs a job also but if someone is going to work harder than you for less than minimum wage, a lot of businesses will take them over you and noeone can complain with that.
He has a point about the "We being the priority" a mistake immigrants are making elsewhere is that they are demanding better jobs, demanding higher wages on top of everything they are already getting.

It's not nearly enough. David Cameron is doing the bare minimum to get people off his back, but he needs to do more.

Just to address some of the main things which have popped up on this thread.

There is plenty of room in this country, the only reason this country ranks as 'overpopulated' is because we have dense communities. Density does not automatically equal overpopulation.
The same people who complain about overpopulation complain about the countryside being ruined by new buildings.
There is plenty of space in this country, and like the OP has said there are plenty of free houses just waiting to be filled.

"6.8% of the UK's land area is now classified as urban" (a definition that includes rural development and roads, by the way).
The urban landscape accounts for 10.6% of England, 1.9% of Scotland, 3.6% of Northern Ireland and 4.1% of Wales.
Put another way, that means almost 93% of the UK is not urban. But even that isn't the end of the story because urban is not the same as built on.
In urban England, for example, the researchers found that just over half the land (54%) in our towns and cities is greenspace - parks, allotments, sports pitches and so on.
Furthermore, domestic gardens account for another 18% of urban land use; rivers, canals, lakes and reservoirs an additional 6.6%.
Their conclusion?
In England, "78.6% of urban areas is designated as natural rather than built". Since urban only covers a tenth of the country, this means that the proportion of England's landscape which is built on is 2.27%.

The whole argument about 'He needs to sort out his own people first!' is simply a straw man.
Just because there are problems in this country doesn't mean that we can completely ignore anyone else who needs help.
You're saying, 'Let's help these people rather than these people' when you should be saying, 'Let's help these people and these people.'
We are capable of helping both at the same time which is something a lot of people seem to be forgetting.

The people saying that they're coming over and stealing our jobs, the London School of Economics has found that immigration doesn't keep down wages or lead to an increase in unemployment among people who have lived here all of their lives.
Here's some toilet reading for those of you who actually care about having an informed opinion: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

Why should we, who have grown up in privilege and wealth all of our lives, be the priority?
They are humans too, you're essentially saying that because they might make it a bit harder for you to find work [WHICH THEY DON'T], or ruin a little bit of your countryside, or, God forbid, move in next door, they should return to their war torn country and be killed in an airstrike which has been dropped on their house by a drone paid for by your taxes?

Italy, France and Spain are taking in more immigrants than the UK.
If all they cared about was Benefits there would be more trying to get into the UK, and not over 100,000 settling with France, Italy and Spain, and a bunch of other European countries that map glosses over as 'No War.'

How about we inject some empathy into the world rather than increasing these trivial divisions we have. Borders should mean absolutely nothing when people are fleeing from a war torn area. Everyone should have the right to live, even if that means slightly inconveniencing people in another country.

I don't think that most people realise that turning away these immigrants means that they will probably die. I don't want that blood on my hands over this country becoming a little bit more populated and a family from a different culture moving in next door. Do you?

BigRedMachine wrote The UK will accept up to 20,000 refugees from Syria over the next five years, David Cameron has told MPs.

The prime minister said the UK had a "moral responsibility" to resettle refugees living in camps bordering Syria while also doing all it can to end the conflict in the country.

Vulnerable children and orphans would be prioritised in what would be a "national effort", Mr Cameron said.

France earlier announced that it would take in 24,000 refugees over the next two years.

The stupidity in this threat is irritating.

THESE PEOPLE ARE NOT ECONOMIC MIGRANTS, THEY ARE NOT HERE TO "STEAL YOUR JOB"

If you want to talk about Immigrants, Make a new thread about that. These people are poor people escaping war torn countries and poor living conditions. You would do the same.

You also seem to be an idiot.

Ukraine- No war in Ukraine? Please tell me that was an error.
Turkey- 1.9 million Syrian Refugees. 1.9 million.
Greece- Greece can't even afford to keep HOSPITALS open rn.
Hungary- Refuses to take in Muslim refugees.
Germany- ACCEPT ANY REFUGEES THAT MAKE IT THIS FAR. GERMANY LET THEM COME.

Just 6% of Syrian Refugees are currently heading for EU Countries. Fellow Arab countries have taken in 4,006,288.

Yes... And they are becoming immigrants. I don't know about the British economy but both the Canadian and US economies aren't doing too well and taking in more people who are gonna suck off the tit of the government won't help. Of course they won't steal the jobs they probably won't get one!

BigRedMachine wrote People seem to forget that 20,000 over a 5 year period is only a small amount compared to what other countries are accepting. Germany are taking 800,000. France 24,000 with plans to relocate 120,000. Italy 40,000. Spain 30,000. With countries planning to relocate a further 160,000 across South Eastern Europe
Um, look at the sizes of the countries. Say something with some sence.
