When it comes to the taken king its like all the other DLC it adds new weapons / armor and a few other things to the game, there are new Raids / strikes, plus by doing the lvl 36 trikes it even changes how some of the original strikes playout with different bosses etc.

As for the patrol on the dreadnaught. There are random encounters yeah but just like all other patrols you will get the odd ultra or Leutenant attack you and let you kill them. you can also get summon stones that allow you to use the in the Court of Oryx and fight bosses with good chances of getting gear from them

in addtion to that you have the whole new Year 2 stuff (subclasses) and the New Raid too.
